Have you thought about even going smaller, say a 42?
Don’t the big guys frequently use a 44 when they using a single ring?
It doesn’t seem right to be trying to use the same gears as world class racers.
Dave might get caught in the big ring when he shouldn’t be and bog down with his 46; perfect time to ride around him!

A 38/44 combo is plenty good for Dale Knapp. It’s more than good enough for you and me. I run the same set up. Although that Dura Ace 46t is so sexy! Too bad I spent my discretionary cross budget already on some tires.

Hey Walt, I run a 38/44 double on the front. I’m in the 44 most of the time but like the 38 for heavy races.
